WHAT DOES A CHIEF HAPPINESS OFFICER DO?

As our Chief Happiness Officer, I am in charge of morale and overseeing the wellness and growth of the team at KIN Partners.

The way we work has changed significantly over time, especially after the year that was 2020. Employees are looking for more than just job security, and greater value is put on a workplace that prioritises the happiness of its people. When the wellness of team members is paramount, this not only benefits the individual, but the workplace will be rewarded with higher employee engagement and productivity levels.

An unexpected consequence of returning to COVID-normal and being out and about more, is that many workplaces have seen employees falling ill. One cannot help but think that the impact of 2020 on our lives and our mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing has played a part.

So for my inaugural blog post, I would like to share with you a few things that I have been encouraging at KIN to create a happier, healthier and more engaged team.

Gnarly’s wellness tips to enhance your workplace

  • Regular exercise and getting up from your desk throughout the day is a great way to refocus or let off some steam. I am always up for a walk around the park or a game of fetch, and a full body wag on the spot takes only a minute. I wouldn’t recommend digging up the garden bed though!
  • Practising gratitude. At KIN Partners we express our gratitude every Tuesday – also referred to as Gratituesday! Studies show that gratitude is positively correlated with happiness and overall better mental wellbeing – and it doesn’t cost a thing! I am constantly showing my appreciation and thanks to my team with lots of slobbery licks, a waggly tail and warm cuddles.
  • Flexible work hours will enable your team to maintain their life balance, leading to greater contentment and higher retention rates. I can’t control my enthusiasm when I see Katie sign off her computer at lunchtime and grab the ChuckIt for an afternoon of frolicking at the beach!
  • Eating a balanced diet including plenty of vegetables, protein and fruit. I am definitely an advocate for indulging in daily treats as well, but always in moderation.
  • Encouraging employees who are unwell to stay home and recover completely before returning to work. If an employee returns to work too early, it not only prolongs their recovery period but will also expose other co-workers to the bug. Regular puppy naps help me get back on track when I’m feeling run down.
  • A big part of feeling fulfilled in work and life is to continually educate and develop ourselves. Underpinning our value of ‘growth’ at KIN, is encouraging and empowering our people to pursue their dreams and goals by providing opportunities for self-reflection and professional and personal development. For me, learning new tricks each day (especially when treats are involved) leaves me feeling more accomplished and prouder of myself, especially when I am recognised by my peers.

These are just some small things that you can encourage in your workplace, but will have an immediate impact on the productivity, involvement, and overall happiness of your team.
